Nursing Grants

November 20, 2011

The demand for great nurses never ceases. There are many people that feel called to the nursing field today that don’t have any hope for being able to pay for the rigorous educational process required. That’s why there are some wonderful grant programs set up just for nursing students.

The main reason there are a number of nursing grants available is to combat the nurse shortage that looms in the future. There will be a greater need with fewer nurses to meet that need without the help of nursing grants.

Nursing Grants

That’s why there are many nursing grants available to nursing schools all over the country. Some of these grants attach a stipulation that those receiving them will work as a nurse for a minimum amount of time in places where they’re needed the most.

Two of the federal grants for nursing school that are offered are the Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students and the Nursing Scholarship Program.

The first one is for students that want to study nursing or other health areas but don’t have enough money to do so and isn’t required to be repaid.

The second one is a highly sought after one that covers all tuition along with other expenses like books, uniforms, lab fees, insurance and travel with an additional $1,000 monthly. However, to be eligible for this one, nursing school students must commit to working at a facility considered to have a great demand for nurses at least twos following graduation.

There are also professional grants for nurses that want to further their education. These include:

  • The Gerontological Society of America: Students eligible for these grants must be involved in advanced research on aging.
  • The Emergency Nurses Foundation Association: Emergency room nurses are eligible for these grants at all study levels.
  • The National Health Service Corps: For those people willing to commit to service ranging from two to four years, there is financial aid available. However, these nurses need a master’s degree or higher as certified nurse practitioners or nurse midwives. These grants provide full tuition and fees in addition to other expenses related to education and approximately $1,000 monthly extra.

As you can see, these nursing grants can help you out tremendously on your path to becoming a nurse. They’re highly sought after; therefore, you need to get an early start if you plan on applying for any of them. Follow all instructions when completing paperwork. Something else that may help is getting some referral letters from people that may be influential.
